Hard work is paying off - Flitcroft

Barnsley's David Flitcroft hopes his players can put their poor start to the season behind them after landing their first win in seven.

A 3-2 victory over Middlesbrough was only the Reds' second success in 12 Sky Bet Championship games this season and lifted them off the bottom of the table.

"We've talked about the performances lately, but I know that you're judged on results," he said.

"We kept them quiet and kept them at bay. To have a no-fear approach and play with the detail that we planned is pleasing.

"As a football coach, you're always building a jigsaw.

"We've done a lot of things wrong and made a lot of mistakes early on in the season, but we're making that right with hard work."

Flitcroft confirmed that former Celtic winger Paddy McCourt was withdrawn soon after he scored due to illness.

"He started sloppy," Flitcroft added. "He didn't seem right - certainly for the first 20 minutes. He was sick on the pitch, so we had to get him off.

"There's nothing really like him in the Championship. He's got a sway of the body that's so unpredictable."
