But Berbatov says that he always wanted to make the switch to Old Trafford and now intends to prove his worth to the United fans who believe he can be the Premiership's top scorer this season.
"I respect City for their unbelievable last-minute bid," he said.
"Things stalled for 3-4 hours. The time was very hard, but I had voiced my opinion. Those who know me are aware that I had only one goal - to put on a Manchester United shirt.
"I do not think money is number one. I can live equally well with 1 million and 10 millions. I have joined a club I regard the best one in the world."
Those supporters who use the £25 free bet will expect Berbatov to get on the goal trail straight away and the 27-year-old, who is likely to make his United debut at Anfield on September 12, believes he has joined United at the peak of his powers.
He said: "From now on there are hard tasks ahead. I have to strengthen my position and live up to Manchester confidence and make fans happy.
"A dream has come true. I hope that in United I will show the ability I have shown up to now because I am in the prime of my life."
