Birmingham's bid to follow up the signing of Aruna Dindane with a swoop for Tottenham forward Roman Pavlyuchenko has been rejected.

The Blues are close to sealing a deal in the region of £4million for Ivory Coast international, Dindane, who has spent the first half of the season on loan at cash-strapped Premier League rivals Portsmouth.

The player has been at St Andrews on Friday and is set to complete the formalities of the move in the near future which would allow boss Alex McLeish to concentrate on his next target ahead of Monday's 5pm deadline.

Reports had claimed Spurs' out-of-favour Russian international, Pavlyuchenko, was in talks with Birmingham about a move away from White Hart Lane after the Londoners snapped up striker Eidur Gudjohnsen on loan from Monaco.

However it has now been revealed that an undisclosed offer for the player has been rejected on Friday afternoon as Tottenham will no doubt look to recoup the £13m they paid Spartak Moscow for Pavlyuchenko only 17 months ago. Therefore the Blues owner Carson Yeung will have to match that figure if he wants to take the player north to the Midlands.
