Boss' high hopes for starlet

BirminghamBlues boss Alex McLeish has high hopes for local teenager Ashley Sammons after he signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the club.

The City boss was delighted to hand Sammons his first professional contract and says the energetic midfielder can break into the first-team picture soon.

"We're delighted for Ashley. He's a very mobile player and a really good character and attentive listener," said McLeish.

"If he continues to show the desire that he has been doing he can go a long way in the game."

Sammons, 17, who hails from Solihill and has also been selected to play for England's Under-18 side is well aware that the hard work starts now.

"Ever since I joined the academy my goal has been to get a professional contract," he said.

"I'm delighted to have one now. However I am fully aware the hard work starts here. You have to keep working hard.

"My aim now is to get in the senior side on a consistent basis."
