Birmingham boss Alex McLeish remains confident Lee Bowyer will sign permanently with Blues this summer as he strengthens his midfield.

The Scot is looking to assemble a side capable of competing in the Premier League again and former loan star Bowyer fits the bill.

McLeish has also confirmed he is looking to add more to his engine room and has not ruled out moves into the loan market either at home or abroad.

He told the club's website: "We believe Lee will rejoin the cause and that we can we add other midfielders - one, possibly two before the season starts."

Birmingham are understood to have increased their wage offer to Patrick Vieira in a last-ditch attempt to sign the French midfielder.
