O'Connor injury verdict joy for Blues

BirminghamBirmingham City have been boosted after scans showed striker Garry O'Connor's groin problem does not require surgery.

It was feared the Scotland international could be sidelined for a significant spell after suffering the injury in the warm-up before Blues' Championship loss at QPR last weekend. However, while Blues boss Alex McLeish confirmed O'Connor faces several weeks out of action, he revealed the diagnosis is a lot better than they initially feared.

"O'Connor went to see a specialist on Wednesday and he won't need an operation," McLeish told the club's official website.

"There's just a wee bit of wear and tear there and once we get him back fit again we'll just have to monitor him. He'll have to do extra work in the gym to try and take preventative measures.

"He had an injection earlier in the season and we thought that would see him through because once the effects of the injection wore off he was buzzing and his form was tremendous. But we lost him going into that QPR game when his confidence couldn't have been higher."
