Return raid blow for McLeish

BirminghamBirmingham manager Alex McLeish has been told to forget about a return raid on his old club Rangers for full-back Kirk Broadfoot.

Reports had suggested McLeish would attempt to bring Broadfoot to St Andrews in the January window, in order to beef up his defensive options for the second phase of Blues' promotion push.

However, Rangers manager Walter Smith says he intends to keep hold of the Scotland defender and will hold talks with Broadfoot about a new contract soon.

Smith said: "I have no problem with giving him a new contract - that will come.

"He had a really good season with us last year. He has cemented that with the way he has played and his steadiness with which he has played this season.

"He was a bit inconsistent when he first arrived but now he is gaining experience and is doing really well for us."
