Leon Best is relishing the challenge of breaking into Blackburn's forward line as he nears the end of a long road to recovery from a serious knee injury.

Republic of Ireland international striker Best was Rovers' showpiece signing this summer following a £3million move from Newcastle but suffered cruciate ligament damage in a friendly against AEK Athens.

Jordan Rhodes subsequently arrived at Ewood Park for a club-record £8million fee from Huddersfield and the free-scoring Scotland international has formed a promising partnership with Colin Kazim-Richards, while DJ Campbell is expected to join on loan from QPR later this week after his proposed deadline-day move collapsed.

Nuno Gomes and David Goodwillie provide further striking options for Blackburn boss Michael Appleton but Best is undaunted by the prospect after returning to full training.

"It has been a long time coming, it feels great to be back and it is just a matter of being fit now," he told the Lancashire Telegraph.

"It feels good. I need to get my fitness up for a game. Maybe a few 20 minutes here and there in a reserve game or two and then back in the first team. I will be breathing down their necks soon enough.

"A few days here and there I have been in pain and come in stressed, just through wanting to be back so much, but now I am back, all my tests have come out good and I am stronger than I was before."
