Blackburn have confirmed their interest in Chelsea striker Franco Di Santo but say no approach was made for Kevin Davies.
Rovers are desperate to bring in at least one striker after losing Roque Santa Cruz and Matt Derbyshire this summer but it is proving to be a difficult task for Sam Allardyce.
Di Santo is a target and Rovers are keen to wrap up a season-long loan deal but chairman John Williams says no approach was made for Bolton attacker Davies.
"Di Santo is a player we are interested in but we have not enquired about Kevin Davies," Williams said. "(Bolton chairman) Phil Gartside phoned me to clarify the rumours, not the other way round."
Rovers are also scouring the market abroad although Williams refused to confirm whether and approach has been made for Ruud van Nistelrooy.
"We have been looking around for a proven Premier League striker but it is proving a difficult task," he added. "We may need to look abroad and go down that route."
