Blackburn say they will check on the fitness of Ryan Nelsen before deciding whether he is ready to return to action against Larissa.

The influential defender suffered a slight hamstring injury during the first leg of the Uefa Cup clash against the Greek outfit two weeks ago and has not figured in the Rovers first-team since.

Nelsen is closing in on a return to fitness and Mark Hughes now has to decide whether to recall the player for Thursday's clash.

Nelsen has also just been included in the New Zealand squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Fiji later this month, much to the frustration of Rovers, who are concerned about him jetting off to the other side of the world.

"We need to check on Ryan's fitness," Rovers chairman John Williams said of the situation. "We've always said that the original prognosis was 10 days to a fortnight with him.

"But that decision (on whether he plays) will be taken by Mark Hughes."

As for the player leaving for international duty, Williams added: "In fairness to Ryan, he's indicated that he wants to play a big part for New Zealand in their World Cup qualifying matches.

"It's not to say that it's great for clubs - because the international schedule is not ideal for us - but we understand it. The calendar is very tight. But the frustrating thing is when players come back injured."
