Evatt's official relief

Ian Evatt is thankful referee Gavin Ward's performance in the 1-1 draw at Bristol City on Saturday did not result in Blackpool leaving Ashton Gate empty handed.

Ward awarded the hosts an 81st-minute penalty after Seasiders goalkeeper Matt Gilks was adjudged to have brought down Albert Adomah inside the area, which looked to have denied Michael Appleton's men an away point.

But in added time, Tom Ince netted an equaliser from the spot after the assistant referee spotted debutant Matthew Bates' handball, much to Evatt's relief.

The recalled central defender told the Blackpool Gazette: "The referee gave them a dodgy penalty from nowhere and it would have been a travesty had we lost.

"The guy just booted it out of play. He and Gilo came together but it wasn't a foul. The referee at first said no, then all of a sudden gave them a pen.

"For our penalty, that was one of the best saves I've seen from their centre-half! It was incredible the ref wasn't going to give it - it took the linesman to give it."
