Iceman stronger after Trotters scare

BoltonGretar Steinsson says Bolton's successful battle against relegation last season has helped him develop as a Premier League player.

The 26-year-old Iceland international full-back linked up with the Trotters in a £3million switch from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar in the January transfer window and spent the last five months of the season helping Gary Megson's men scrape home in their fight to avoid the drop.

It took 11 points from the final five games to keep the club up and Steinsson says it has given him a heap of experience going into the new season.

He told the Bolton News: "I will never forget that last couple of months.

"It's something to tell the grandchildren in years to come: how we got away with it, how we got out of it. It was unbelievable, but I don't ever want to go through anything like that again.

"It was mentally hard for the players, the staff and for the fans but it's something we will learn from. We can't let that happen to us again."

On his own form, Steinsson is looking to make further progress after an impressive start to life at the Reebok Stadium.

He added: "I adapted really quickly to the lads and to the English game.

"That's never easy. Sometimes it can take years to make that adjustment.

"But I've got to know the players and I've got to know the club and being here for the start of a new season will be important.

"I feel I am established now, not just a 'winter buy', so I'm really looking forward to the start of the season.

"I can't wait. At the moment it's all about getting ourselves prepared. Being physically fit is important, but we have to be mentally ready for the start. We just can't let the same things happen to us that happened last season."
