Gary Megson has made an official bid for a mystery player, but has conceded defeat in his efforts to sign James Harper.

The Wanderers boss admitted on Tuesday that he was looking to sign two players this week as he bids to bolster the squad at the Reebok Stadium before the transfer deadline on September 1. However, he admitted that his attempt to sign one of his main targets, Reading's Harper, has finally come to an end as he cannot come to an agreement with the Championship club.

Megson is not the only Premier League boss frustrated in his efforts to land the highly-rated 27-year-old midfielder because Middlesbrough chief Gareth Southgate has also given up on taking him to the Riverside due to the Royals unrealistic £6million price tag.

However, the Trotters could have at least one new face on board before Saturday's trip to Newcastle as Megson is working hard to tie up a deal after making a bid for the as-yet-unknown player.

He said: "We've made a bid for one player and we'll just have to see if that's possible."
