Bolton have failed with bids for Portsmouth's Sean Davis and Rangers' Pedro Mendes, as Gary Megson desperately seeks a midfielder.

Having sold Kevin Nolan to Newcastle last week, Wanderers have been on the look out to find a replacement but their attempts have fallen short so far with other clubs not wanting to sell.

Portsmouth boss Tony Adams admitted that a bid had been made for Davis, but insisted he would be 'mad' to let the player 'go somewhere else' and Davis has been offered a new contract at Fratton Park.

Meanwhile, Rangers rebuffed Bolton's bid to sign Mendes, who has impressed for the Gers having signed from Portsmouth in the summer.

Gary Megson recently admitted that he was tracking Sporting Lisbon's highly-rated star Miguel Veloso and although the asking price was reportedly too high, Bolton could now up their offer for the Portuguese ace.
