Bolton admit they were frustrated by a lack of progress on deadline day, with attempts to sign Miguel Veloso falling short.

The Portuguese midfielder was understood to be Gary Megson's main target before Monday's 5pm deadline and despite reports claiming that they upped their bid to £13million, Sporting Lisbon held on to their player until at least the summer.

Last week Megson had failed with bids for Portsmouth's Sean Davis and Rangers' Pedro Mendes and will now have to work with the squad currently at his disposal.

Mark Davies, Sebastien Puygrenier and Ariza Makukula all arrived at the Reebok during the window, with Kevin Nolan the only major departure with his move to Newcastle.

Megson has been buoyed though with the news that the likes of Johan Elmander, Gavin McCann and Joey O'Brien are closing in on returns after recent injury problems.
