Bolton are facing a crisis in defence as Gary Cahill, Andy O'Brien and Greitar Steinsson are all on the sidelines.

Cahill was a shock absentee from the side that drew 0-0 with Fulham on Saturday and it has since emerged that the influential defender picked up a shoulder injury in training on Friday.

Steinsson was included in the side to face the Cottagers but felt ill in the warm up and had to be replaced by Paul Robinson, while O'Brien, who replaced Cahill had to leave the field with a knock midway through the second half.

With no other recognised defender on the bench, Chris Basham had to play in central defence and Owen Coyle will now be hoping none of the injuries are serious as he prepares for Tuesday night's game at Manchester City.

It could mean Danny Shittu getting a rare chance in central defence while Jloyd Samuel could also be brought in from the cold.
