Bolton are expected to announce the signing of Sean Davis on Wednesday when the midfielder becomes a free agent.
The midfielder is available on a free transfer after letting his contract at Fratton Park run down and Wanderers have beaten off competition from the likes of Blackburn to strike a deal.
Trotters boss Gary Megson is thought to have agreed terms with Davis already and will unveil the player as soon as his contract with Pompey expires.
Davis will become Megson's first signing of the summer and he hopes it will be the first of many.
Megson intends to draft in all of his new signings before they travel to Holland for a pre-season training camp in mid July so he faces a busy few weeks of transfer negotiations.
