Bristol Rovers manager Mark McGhee watched Tom Eaves put in a sterling performance in the 3-2 win over Chesterfield.
After defeats to Sheffield United in the FA Cup and Southend in the league, McGhee reverted to a 4-4-2 formation against the Spireites, giving Eaves a strike partner in Joe Anyinsah.
And Eaves responded by making two goals and scoring the winner, with the on-loan Bolton forward proving too hot to handle for Chesterfield's defence.
McGhee said: "I'm big enough to admit I made a mistake in not giving Tom support in the last couple of games.
"Here he was immense and for a loan player to show such commitment was fantastic. I'm really pleased for him. He enjoyed having Joe Anyinsah up alongside and I thought both did really well.
"It was a game we needed to win and hopefully it gives us something to build on. We now have a week to work on the individual mistakes that are still making life difficult for ourselves."
