Sean Dyche is determined to strike a balance between attack and defence during his opening weeks as Burnley manager.
Despite enjoying the imperious form of the country's top scorer Charlie Austin among their ranks, the Clarets head into Dyche's first game in charge against Wolves on Saturday five points from both the Championship's play-off places and relegation zone.
Leaders Cardiff have last weekend's 4-0 victory over Burnley to thank for drawing level with the Clarets' division-leading 26 goals, while 29 conceded is also the largest number in the second tier.
"I think flexibility within the squad is important," Dyche said. "We need to find the join between the attacking prowess, which has been evident at times, and finding that balance between the framework that the players know is productive in stopping the opposition from scoring.
"So that's the immediate challenge and, within that, to bring a more competitive edge consistently. Looking at Burnley and playing against them, there's been a bit of an up and down period of lots of wins, no wins, lots of wins, no wins.
"So it's about that competitive streak, but on a consistent basis week in, week out. Teams come here, we go to their place and they know they're in for a game."
