Peter Whittingham is set to move into central midfield against Newcastle with Gavin Rae out because of injury tonight.

Boss Dave Jones is already without Joe Ledley, who has had the first of two hip operations that could rule him out for the rest of the campaign.

Whittingham is likely to partner fit-again Aaron Wildig or Darcy Blake in central midfield, with Chris Burke and Ross McCormack on either flank.

Midfielder Stephen McPhail and defender Miguel Comminges have returned to training after lengthy absences but neither are included in the Bluebirds squad.

Captain Mark Hudson (ankle), young striker Josh Magennis (broken fibula) and on-loan Kelvin Etuhu (ankle) all remain long-term absentees.
