Birmingham are understood have agreed to pay Cardiff £2m up front for defender Roger Johnson, who will cost £5m overall.

The 26-year-old is known to be Alex McLeish's top defensive target with Blues failing with their first bid to sign the player last month, with an initial fee the stumbling block.

Birmingham wanted to pay £1m up front with further annual payments of £1m, but the Bluebirds were holding out for a bigger initial fee in order to fund their summer transfer plans.

Those issues look to have been resolved though now and reports suggest that Johnson could become a Birmingham player in the next 'seven to 10 days'.
