Cardiff boss Dave Jones says he has failed with a bid to sign Darius Henderson and also looks set to miss out on Marlon King.
Jones is keen to land a new striker and is still gutted after losing out to Birmingham in the race to sign Marcus Bent from Charlton, but the search goes on and the boss has new targets.
However, it looks like more bad news as Henderson seems to be heading for Sheffield United while Wigan striker King could be too expensive.
"We bid for Henderson, but the price went too high," said Jones. "We are also keen on Marlon King, but we simply can't afford the fee plus his Premiership-level wages.
"There is no panic. We will get the players we need. There is plenty of quality on our list. We don't have a number one, two and so on - the players we are interested in can all make an impact at Championships level and beyond."
