Cardiff boss Dave Jones is set to go head to head with Ipswich boss Roy Keane for the services of Damien Delaney from QPR.
It had looked as though Ipswich had got the Irish defender to sign for them but Cardiff have moved back in for the player as they look to replace Roger Johnson who has completed his £5m move to Birmingham.
The fee for the defender is close to £1m with the add ons but that should not pose a problem for Cardiff after the sale of Johnson for five times that amount.
"Delaney was on his way to Ipswich Town, it looked certain the deal would go ahead without a hitch," said a QPR insider. "That's on hold while talks progress with Cardiff City."
