Cardiff midfielder Stephen McPhail described his return against Newcastle as 'fantastic' after he came back ahead of schedule.

The Republic of Ireland international was delighted to be back in action earlier than anticipated after his battle with cancer and, despite the drubbing the side took, he was a happy man after the game.

"The call for me to play against Newcastle came out of the blue," McPhail told Wales online.

"The gaffer said he was short on bodies and could I give him an hour. I jumped at the chance.

"It felt fantastic to get back out on the pitch ahead of schedule. To get the shout for such a big match was great.

"The result was a kick in the teeth, but it was wonderful from a personal perspective to be involved. I felt great out there and I wanted to stay on when the gaffer made the substitution.

"I feel ready to go again."
