Cardiff striker Warren Feeney is set to make a move back to Leeds United despite late interest in him from Grimsby Town.

Northern Ireland striker Feeney spoke of his excitement about a return to Elland Road earlier in the week when it was revealed Cardiff had given him permission to speak to his former club.

Feeney joined Cardiff in 2007 but spent last season on loan at Dundee United.

"Cardiff have given permission for another club to sign me. Leeds United are a massive club and I am excited," he said.

Feeney worked under Grimsby boss Mike Newell at Luton and spoke to the Mariners about a move to Blundell Park but Newell, told the Grimsby Telegraph that as soon as Leeds were involved that was that.

He said: "I did have a number of conversations with Warren and he was interested in a move here - he was seriously considering it.

"But when Leeds showed an interest it was hard for us to compete with their financial resources."
