Addicks scotch takeover talks

CharltonCharlton have scotched reports claiming the club are in talks with American billionaire media mogul Philip Anschutz about a takeover.

The Addicks have moved to quell the claims that Anschutz, whose investment portfolio includes the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, soccer club LA Galaxy, David Beckham's football academy and the nearby O2 Arena in Greenwich, was plotting to add the South London outfit to his collection.

A tabloid report suggested not all of the club's board members were aware of on going discussions, but outgoing chief executive Peter Varney and his replacement Steve Waggott have since both dismissed those claims.

"There is absolutely no truth in this story," said Mr Waggott. "I really don't know where these stories come from."
