Defender switch close

CharltonCharlton Athletic are set to beat QPR and Coventry to the loan capture of Portsmouth defender Martin Crainie.

The Addicks are ready to seal a six-month loan deal for the England Under-21 full-back, who broke his leg while on loan at Loftus Road last season.

Queens Park Rangers and Coventry had also hoped to sort out a loan deal for Crainie but Alan Pardew has reportedly been able to persuade Crainie to go to The Valley.

The 21-year-old joined Portsmouth last summer from Southampton, but he has struggled to establish himself at Fratton Park due to injury.
