Pardew wields the axe

CharltonCharlton have released Paulo Monteiro and Dorian Smith after their short-term contracts expired at The Valley.

Portuguese centre-half Monteiro, 23, was brought in on a free transfer in early February and played several games for Charlton's reserves last term after signing a contract until the end of the season.

Smith joined the Addicks from non-League outfit Tooting & Mitcham in February after impressing manager Alan Pardew during a two-week trial at Charlton's Sparrows Lane training ground.

The Addicks boss told the official club website: "I just didn't think they were going to feature in our first team this season.

"It's a tough budget for us this year and I couldn't afford to take on anyone who I didn't feel could play in the first team."
