Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars admits they cannot compete financially with Chelsea for the signature of Marco Van Ginkel.
The Vitesse Arnhem schemer has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer and could become returning boss Jose Mourinho's first signing of the off-season.
The 20-year-old is currently with the Netherlands Under-21 squad at the European Championship but remained tight-lipped when asked about his future plans.
Vitesse are reportedly willing to sell the 20-year-old for around £8.4million and Overmars conceded that their interest in the player all but ended once the Blues became involved.
"Ajax were very interested in Van Ginkel and we were willing to go quite far," he told Voetbal International. "But if we have to compete with one of the big clubs from England it is always going to be difficult for us. We cannot beat Chelsea's financial resources."
