Blues defender joins Saints

Chelsea left-back Ryan Bertrand has left Stamford Bridge to join Southampton on a season-long loan.

Bertrand has been with the Blues since 2006 but has found regular first-team action hard to come by, spending last season on loan at Aston Villa.

The defender is now set to spend a similar spell with Saints, but this time it's also understood the south-coast club have the option to buy Bertrand outright next summer.

Saints' CEO Gareth Rogers confirmed the deal when he told their official website: "Ryan is a young, attacking full-back and will fit in perfectly with the club's philosophy and style of play.

"This is another important step forward in terms of rebuilding our first-team squad with exciting English talent at its core."

Bertrand will replace Luke Shaw at St Mary's after the defender, who was wanted by Jose Mourinho but demanded too much in wages, joined Manchester United for £28million.
