Chelsea and Manchester City may lose out in the race to sign homesick Paraguayan striker Derlis Gonzalez from Benfica.

Both clubs have made enquiries about the 18-year-old frontman after his stunning displays at the South American Under-20 Championships over the past fortnight.

Gonzalez has scored four goals in the tournament and was in action again last night as Paraguay drew 1-1 with Peru to maintain their bid to win the prestigious title.

Sources at Benfica admit that they may be tempted to sell Gonzalez because he has failed to settle in Portugal after the Portuguese giants paid Rubio Nu a million euros for him last summer.

However, the player would prefer to return to Paraguay where there is interest from their top club side Guarani.

Augusto Paraja, the agent for Gonzalez, told a radio station "He is tempting to any European club, but he is lost Europe. [He has] not settled at Benfica and there is a club in Paraguay who is interested and has precedence - Guarani.

"We are waiting to hear Benfica's position."
