Chelsea will keep plugging away though and chief executive Peter Kenyon says there is still time to hammer out a deal.
Kenyon told the club's website: "One of the key issues over buying Robinho has always been that Real Madrid are looking for a replacement. It is fair to say that is what has been holding up discussion between the two clubs.
"It has not progressed over the last couple of days but the window is open until the end of August so there is still plenty of time to run."
