Blues set example for Villa chief

ChelseaMartin O'Neill has admitted he wants his Aston Villa players to follow the example being set by Premier League title hopefuls Chelsea.

The Villa boss is pleased with his side's start to the campaign, but witnessed the players crash out of the Champions League places after going down 2-0 at Stamford Bridge last Sunday. And O'Neill feels Luiz Felipe Scolari's men are the ones to try and emulate this season.

"I'm delighted with the attitude of the side and I'm delighted with the way we have been playing," he told the club's official website.

"But Chelsea's performance last weekend is where we need to get to. That's what we want to aspire to otherwise it's pointless being in the Premier League.

"That's the standard you have to achieve and it's not reaching that twice a season, it's getting there on a regular basis.

"In fairness to us, I don't think many teams would have lived with Chelsea in that first half.

"But by the same token, it doesn't mean that you just down tools and have your own mini league. Not at all. This is where we want to be and expect to be.

"We were on the up and then suddenly we're dealt a real severe lesson. You then have to pick yourselves up and go again!

"Portsmouth (next weekend) becomes absolutely vital. They had a stodgy start but they have won the last couple of games and they are flying again."
