Chelsea are thought to have fought off competition from Barcelona and agreed a deal to sign Porto defender Nicolas Otamendi next year.
The Blues, along with Barca and AC Milan, were strongly linked with a move for the Argentine centre-half this year but were frustrated in their pursuits as Porto kept hold of the 25-year-old.
However, the Portuguese giants have resigned themselves to losing Otamendi next summer and are thought to have agreed in principal to sell him to Chelsea.
Jose Mourinho is a long-term admirer of the South American, who has been compared to current Blues player Branislav Ivanovic in the past.
The Argentina international's reported move to Stamford Bridge could pave the way for David Luiz to leave the club next summer as Barcelona maintain their interest in the Brazilian.
