Clarke severs links with Blues

ChelseaSteve Clarke has quit as Chelsea's assistant first-team coach - clearing the way for him to join Gianfranco Zola at West Ham.

Clarke has been a key part of Chelsea's staff for more than 20 years as a player and coach but has been strongly linked with a move to link up with former Blues teammate and new West Ham boss Zola this week.

The Scot's role at Stamford Bridge has come under increasing scrutiny this season following the arrival of new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari and some reports have suggested he has had minimal involvement in first-team plans in recent weeks.

Announcing Clarke's decision to resign, a Chelsea spokesman said on Friday: "We have not given permission to talk to him. After discussions on Thursday, Steve tendered his resignation. Talks will continue."
