Everton boss drops Lukaku hint

Last Updated: Sun, 27 Jul 2014 15:21

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has told fans he is expecting Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku to return to the club in the near future.

The Belgium international was a massive hit on Merseyside during his season-long loan spell last term and the Toffees manager has been pushing for a permanent deal ever since.

Lukaku bagged 15 goals for Everton in his 31 Premier League appearances, after spending the previous year on loan with West Bromwich Albion.

The forward's long-term future at Stamford Bridge has been a source of much debate during the close-season, with a number of clubs including Everton lining up for his signature if the Blues eventually decide to let him move on.

Martinez, who is also targeting a swoop for Monaco forward Lacina Traore, hopes a deal can be done quickly to get him back at Goodison Park before the close of next month's transfer window and has responded favourably to a question about his return by a supporter.

In a YouTube video captured by an Evertonian during the club's pre-season trip to Thailand, the Spaniard said, when asked if they would be signing Lukaku, "Of course we'll get him."

His remarks follow a similar positive answer given on the matter by Everton head of recruitment Ian Atkins in an interview with a national radio station.

Atkins told Talksport: "Romelu had a terrific season for Everton last year and I know everyone at the football club wants to see him back.

"Hopefully things can be sorted out, I think he's quite settled in his mind that he wants to come to Everton, and hopefully he'll be pulling on our blue shirt again next term.

"Our loan signings all did brilliant for us last season. Gareth Barry has signed permanently now which is fantastic, and hopefully Lukaku will as well."
