Napoli are understood to have increased Edinson Cavani's release clause to £77million, in a bid to ward off interest from Chelsea.

Chelsea are widely thought to be on the lookout for a new finisher in the January transfer window and the Blues have a long-held interest in Cavani which dates back to the Uruguayan's goal against Andre Villas-Boas' side back in February.

The 26-year-old has scored 83 goals in 112 matches for the Serie A club and, alongside Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao, would be one of the few strikers around that could claim to be worthy of succeeding Didier Drogba.

Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez will persist with misfiring frontman Fernando Torres, who has failed to score in his last nine Premier League fixtures, until January when its is likely that moves will be made.

Cavani appears settled in Italy but could potentially double or triple his earnings with a switch to Stamford Bridge.
