Cook slams tame Spireites

Paul Cook pulled no punches after Chesterfield's 2-1 defeat at Wycombe, labelling his spineless side "soft and weak".

The Spireites were good value for a first-half lead, courtesy of Jay O'Shea, only for Kortney Hause to level matters for the hosts in first-half stoppage time.

Both sides went close after the interval but Jo Kuffour's brilliantly improvised finish - his first goal in Wycombe colours - consigned the visitors to a third successive league defeat on their travels.

Cook said: "We've come away from home, we start the game well and we're well on top. We score first and we should go on to dominate the game. We should create more chances and score goals but our record says we concede and when we concede we look like caving in.

"And I felt at times in the second half we did cave in. We lost our balance, our shape and when you're looking for a leader or two we don't really seem to have them.

"We lack fire in our belly, we lack hunger and we're too soft centred. We'll soon put fire in the belly because if we don't put it into these lads, I'd imagine I might get a chance to put it in one or two different ones.

"It takes the right blend to make a good football team, but our blend's not right. We've got some good players, it's not all doom and gloom.

"But the likelihood is we're one of those teams that'll finish mid-table because on our day we're good, but we don't have them very often. If you get at us and put balls in our box we'll concede goals.

"Football management drives you mad. When you win you know you're only a week away from disaster. We're not unlucky, we're soft and we're weak."
