U's job is surely Dunne

Colchester manager Joe Dunne praised his "magnificent" players after they thumped Brentford 4-1 to effectively seal their survival.

But Dunne is refusing to celebrate just yet, with the U's not yet mathematically safe despite being three points clear of the relegation zone with a game to go.

Marcus Bean bundled in Brian Wilson's free-kick under pressure from George Saville to give Colchester a 25th-minute lead.

The U's made it 2-0 three minutes later when loanee Alex Wynter headed in Ryan Dickson's corner and Freddie Sears added Colchester's third from the spot, after Alan McCormack had fouled Sanchez Watt in the area.

Brentford pulled a goal back in first-half stoppage-time when Stuart Dallas lashed in from 20 yards from Clayton Donaldson's lay-off.

However, Sears restored Colchester's three-goal cushion in the 64th minute, after a mix-up between goalkeeper David Button and James Tarkowski.

U's goalkeeper Sam Walker denied Alan Judge from the spot, as Colchester claimed a huge win.

Dunne said: "It gives us a chance.

"At times I thought that we were magnificent and the effort and commitment was exceptional.

"My players gave everything to the cause.

"We got out of the traps fast and the atmosphere was fantastic.

"We spent a lot of time talking about set-pieces and two of them paid off for us and we had a bit of luck with our fourth goal.

"I know what my team's capable of and we showed that.

"My players will enjoy the weekend, but we want to win next weekend.

"I've spoken about resilience with our backs to the wall and my players deserve great credit for what they have done.

"The fans were magnificent and when I saw them doing the conga behind the goal, I was so pleased for them - it's taken until the second last game of the season for them to have that feeling."
