Crewe manager Steve Davis was left scratching his head after his side were held to a draw by Notts County in a real game of two halves at Meadow Lane.

The Railwaymen dominated the opening 45 minutes with a composed display, following on from their superb midweek win at Coventry, but were left to rue not making the most of it.

The only goal in the first-half came late on from skipper Luke Murphy who scored from the penalty spot after Gavin Mahon had tripped Ajay Leitch-Smith inside the box.

However, the hosts were revitalised in the second period and levelled through on-loan Manchester United striker John Cofie, making his debut, with a terrific 20-yard finish.

Davis said afterwards that he felt it was two points dropped and he was frustrated his team did not heed his half-time warning.

"We were the better team, first half in particular, " he said. "We played some really good football and got into those pockets really well causing them a lot of problems but we couldn't really take our chances.

"I couldn't see a problem and they weren't causing us any difficulties in the first half.

"I had a half-time talk to them and said they will go 4-4-2 and whack it forward and they will try and get wingers getting crosses in. Low and behold, in the second half that is what they did which, to be fair, I think they had to as their crowd had been getting on top of them. But we weren't quite ready for it despite what I had said and we couldn't cope with it.

"We couldn't reproduce in the second half what we did in the first, which was a disappointment and I think that has been the case a few times this season.

"Why that is I don't know and it is something we need to look at as a team. You see what they're capable of with some of their play sometimes and then you don't see it other times. We need to be more consistent."
