Dario Gradi says he is looking to bring in some defenders when the transfer window reopens, following their 3-1 defeat to Swansea.
Swansea's Lee Trundle scored twice to help the visitors seal the three points as Crewe's central defensive partnership of Neil Cox and Julien Baudet looked stretched.
But even though they currently lie 16th in the League One standings following Tuesday's defeat, Gradi is remaining optimistic and says he is confident that his side can produce a strong fightback in the rest of the season, but admits he needs to strengthen his defensive if they are to do that.
He said: "Trundle didn't take us apart. What he did was turn Cox and turn Baudet. He didn't get behind them to score and they were only inches out. It was good ability by him.
"We haven't got a tough guy at the back. We need someone there who gets a cut eyebrow or two.
"I don't think Cox and Baudet are doing badly, but it is worrying to concede as many goals. I have to work out if there is a reason for it or whether we're just having a bad spell."
