Collingwood keen to turn corner

CricketPaul Collingwood said he never gave up hope of winning an England Test recall after suffering "the worst year of my career".

The one-day skipper was brought back in to the 13-man squad for the crucial third Test against South Africa, which starts at Edgbaston on Wednesday, and could make the side if England revert to six batsman and four bowlers.

The recall marks a turnaround for the 32-year-old Durham player, who was axed after a return of 92 runs in nine first-class innings. He was also banned for four one-day internationals as a result of England's slow over-rate in a game against New Zealand and criticised for unsportsmanlike conduct in an incident involving Grant Elliott at The Oval in June.

"It's been the worst year of my career but once you have got over the hurt you look at it and realise that hope is just around the corner," said Collingwood.

"I worried about what this meant for me when I was left out of Headingley and it was without doubt the biggest disappointment of my career.

"The only thing that comes close to it was when I was left out of the second Test in Pakistan and I worried whether I would ever make it as a Test player."
