He has made telling contributions from time to time but lacked the consistency of his former years when took wickets with regularity.
Lancashire officials have opted not to renew his contact for the 2009 season but Flintoff feels they have made a mistake as the player is worth more to the club than just his statistics bear out.
"I was very surprised to hear he was being released, and I think Lancashire should have kept him on," he said. "If you look at that side, players like Dominic are among the leaders. I'd have him as one of the first names on my team-sheet.
"The best thing that could happen is for someone to turn around, tell him 'we've made a mistake,' and keep him. But I'm not sure that is going to happen.
"I've enjoyed playing with Dominic over the years and I wish I was playing with him again next year.
"It's not just the way he bowls, but it's his presence on the field as well. I'm sure there will be a lot of counties chasing him."
