Ganguly has played 109 Tests, 49 as captain, amassing 6,888 runs at an average of 41.74, including 15 hundreds and 34 fifties. India won 21 matches with him in charge - which remains a record for the country at Test level.
India's selectors picked Ganguly in a 15-man squad for the first two Tests against Australia despite speculation beforehand that he would be dropped.
"This will be my last series," Ganguly told reporters after a training session.
"To be honest, I didn't expect to be picked for this series.
"Before coming here, I spoke to my team-mates and hopefully I will go out with a winning knock."
