Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla both scored centuries as South Africa ended day one of the first Test with India on 291-2.
Proteas skipper Graeme Smith elected to bat first but found his side 6-2 after Ashwell Prince was caught behind off the bowling of Zaheer Khan for a duck and the captain himself was bowled by Khan for just six.
But any thoughts of a collapse were quickly put out of the tourists' minds as Kallis and Amla put together an unbroken partnership of 285 for the third wicket in Nagpur.
Kallis finished unbeaten on 159, with 13 fours and two sixes and, in doing so, drew level with Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara with 34 Test tons to his name.
Amla ended the day 115 not out, with 11 fours, and the pair will look to continue on day two, with the likes of AB de Villiers, JP Duminy and Mark Boucher still to come for the visitors.
Zaheer finished with the respectable figures of 2-67, but Harbhajan Singh disappointed the home fans with 0-81 from his 21 overs.
