Lawson keen on England post

Former Australia fast bowler Geoff Lawson has thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant England bowling coach job.

The 52-year-old, who took 180 wickets in a 46-Test, injury-plagued career for the Aussies, began his coaching career with Australian state side New South Wales in 1995 and stayed in the job for two years before taking over as Pakistan head coach.

He was given a two-year contract by the PCB but lasted just 15 months before being sacked.

The Wagga Wagga-born quickie is set to work with a number of county sides at pre-season training camps in India in February and March this year and, despite being a proud Aussie, Lawson sees no problem in working with the old enemy.

"In the modern world a coach goes to where the job is," he said. "You don't really mind which country you are dealing with as long as they have good players and a good system.

"The Ashes is only 10 months away and it would certainly be interesting to be involved in the other dressing room."

The position became available after Ottis Gibson made the decision to take over as coach of the West Indies and names such as Allan Donald, Michael Kasprowicz and Shaun Pollock have been mentioned in connection with the post.

But Lawson has been the most vocal of the possibilities and he told the BBC that he is keeping a keen eye on developments.

"I've been involved with the game for a long time and have a lot to offer. Without a doubt I am interested," he added.

"I will need to look at the England and Wales Cricket Board's condition and then we'll see what happens. The feelers are already out there in some shape or form.

"I really need to see what it is the ECB want, bearing in mind that Andy Flower could have a specific person in mind. I don't actually know if the ECB are advertising for the job, or how they're going about it really.

"It may be that with the Ashes coming up they need to employ a coach just for that series."
