It was a valuable knock for Ponting as the side, already without the injured Matthew Hayden, were rattled when they lost openers Simon Katich and Phil Jaques for just 12 and nine respectively to leave them on 37-2.
However Ponting and Mike Hussey (56) helped put on 137 for the third wicket, while Brad Hodge chipped in with 53 not out to put Australia back in charge of proceedings going into day two.
Ponting said: "I didn't feel like I did much wrong today, to tell the truth. It's satisfying to be out there and feel in control again.
"150-odd - I'm happy with that, but it's day one of a Test match and lots of things can happen quickly in Test cricket. We have to make sure we put two really good days together. If we do that, we will be in the box seat in the game."
West Indies spin bowler Amit Jaggernauth added: "Being given the ball with Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey at the crease was a huge challenge. I thought my performance in the end was a decent one, I handled it well.
"For a first day track, I thought the pitch had some degree of turn and I would expect as the Test goes along the turn would definitely increase - on the third and fourth days, it's going to be spinning huge."
