In just his fifth Test match, Malinda Warnapura became the first batsman into three figures but he was soon followed by his skipper Jayawardene (136) and despite India removing both before the close, a miserable day for the bowling attack ended with Thilan Samaraweera becoming the third man to pass 100 in the innings.
History was also made in today's play as India skipper Anil Kumble became the first player to take advantage of the ICC's new referral system.
He asked for the third umpire Rudi Koertzen to intervene after an lbw appeal against Warnapura had been rejected by on-field umpire Mark Benson.
However, after looking at TV footage, Koertzen agreed with the man in the middle and Warnapura was allowed to continue.
It wasn't the only time India were to miss out due to the new referral system as they thought they had Tillakaratne Dilshan caught behind, but after a challenge from the batsman the initial 'out' verdict was overturned, as replays proved indecisive over whether he had touched the ball.
Dilshan went on to reach 20 at the close alongside Samaraweera, who came through some nervy early moments before ending the day unbeaten on 111.
