Smith misses third ODI

CricketSouth African captain Graeme Smith will miss the third one-day international at The Oval on Friday with a tennis elbow problem.

The 27-year-old has played through the pain barrier for much of the summer and is unlikely to play any further part in the tour now, with his country 2-0 down in the best-of-five series.

Jacques Kallis will captain the side in Smith's absence - less than a year after he gave up the vice-captaincy following his axing from the Proteas' Twenty20 squad.

Kallis, who has also suffered tennis elbow problems in the past, has filled in for Smith on two separate occasions in 2006 and 2007, taking charge of seven one-day internationals.

Coach Mickey Arthur said: "Graeme shouldn't have played in The Oval Test match but he is such a hard guy and a driven person.

"We realised he couldn't go on any more. We need him fully fit for Australia (in December)."

Smith will stay with the squad and Arthur added: "It will give Graeme and I an opportunity to plan where we are going with our one-day side."
