India made a strong start to their innings, reaching 51-0 after just seven overs before suffering another collapse to leave them on 198-9.
Prasad's raw pace caused no end of problems for the tourists openers as he claimed the wickets of Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar to finish with figures of 82 for 3.
Only Gautam Gambhir offered some early resistance as he made 72 before eventually being dismissed by Mendis as the spinners began to take control.
Mendis ended up taking four more wickets as he ended the innings with figures of 56 for 5, which also included four maiden overs as the Indian batsmen struggled to cope with the pitch.
Muttiah Muralitharan chipped in with two wickets as Sri Lanka ripped through India's middle order with 4 wickets falling for just 45 runs.
Sri Lanka began their innings with caution but still lost the wicket of Malinda Warnapura for just eight as they ended the day on 14-1, with Ishant Sharma claiming the wicket.
